Bowel Preparation for a Cystectomy

Pre-Surgery Regimen

To prepare you for your surgery, we use Citroma® (Magnesium Citrate). You will also be given prescriptions for two different antibiotics, to be taken during the morning, afternoon and evening on the day prior to your surgery.

Please read these instructions carefully. Do no exceed recommended dosage as serious side effects may occur.

Follow the steps as they are listed below.

If you are taking any of the medications on this list, and we have not had the opportunity to discuss this, please do not proceed with the Pre-Surgery Regimen. Call me immediately.

Clear Liquids Diet List

Do not drink or eat anything colored red or purple.

Two Days Prior to Surgery

Breakfast

Have a light breakfast which may include:

After This Meal

Continue to drink plenty of fluids to ensure that you are well-hydrated.

Drink all the clear liquids you like from the “Clear Liquids Diet List” above.

Evening

You may drink all the clear liquids you desire.

The Day Prior to Your Surgery

Breakfast

Drink all the clear liquids you like.

10 AM: First dose of each antibiotic (total of 2 pills)

Lunch (12:00 PM)

Take one bottle of Citroma® (Magnesium Citrate). This can be drunk at once or over 1 hour. You may mix it with ice or any of the above clear liquids.

Individual response to laxatives will vary. This prep often works within 30 minutes but may take as long as 3 hours. Remain close to a toilet as multiple bowel movements will occur.

2 PM: Second dose of each antibiotic (total of 2 pills)

Afternoon

Drink all the clear liquids you like.

Dinner

Drink all the clear liquids you like.

10 PM: Third dose of each antibiotic (total of 2 pills)

No eating or drinking after midnight!

The Day of surgery

You may take any blood pressure medications with a sip of water in the morning before coming to the hospital

If you are a diabetic, you should not have taken any Gyburide, Glucophage® or other diabetic/“sugar” pill. You should have taken one half your usual insulin dose.
