The Day of Prostate Cancer Surgery
You should have been doing the following prior to surgery:
- One week prior to surgery, you should have stopped taking any aspirin, ibuprofen or product containing aspirin or ibuprofen.
- If you are taking Coumadin®, Plavix® or Heparin, you must have stopped taking it at least 5 days prior to surgery. You should have asked the doctor who prescribed that drug whether it was OK to do this.
- The day prior to surgery, you should have cleansed your system by doing the following:
- Eat a regular breakfast
- After breakfast, taken in only clear liquids
- During the hour between 1PM and 2 PM, you should have drunk a mixture containing the following:
- 1 bottle Citroma® (Magnesium Citrate)
- A cold can of Sprite® or 7up®
- You should have had nothing else to eating or drinking after midnight.
- The morning of surgery, you should have taken all your medications as scheduled, with a sip of water.
- If you are a diabetic, you should not have taken any Gyburide, Glucophage® or other diabetic/“sugar” pill. You should have taken one half your usual insulin dose.
The day of surgery, you will meet with me, and I’ll introduce you to the anesthesiologist and the other members of my surgical team.
